Every child possesses a unique profile, like behaviors, interests, family traits, learning capacity, etc. Let’s imagine due to some reason you leave your child at home alone. Will he/she be able to manage stuff by her/himself, like laundry, basic cooking, communication with others, cleaning, etc.? Why not equip them with essential life skills that help them to face the world in your absence? There are few essential life skills we can build in our child at home, such as problem-solving skills, decision making, and communication skills, etc. In this article we will discuss important life skills that every parent should teach their child at home to succeed in later life
1- Build Decision-Making Skills
Decision-making ability is the most important life skill that every parent should teach to kids from a very young age. Decision-making ability helps them to choose the best available option after analyzing the pros and cons of every option. Parents can build this skill by giving them an opportunity to do daily tasks like choosing between 2 different pairs of socks, 2 different foods, activities and playing video games, etc. Parents also assist them while they are making decisions about the consequences. Decision-making skills make kids responsible and independent. And also give them leverage to make mistakes because it’s a part of the learning process.

Focus and self-control is a very crucial skill to develop. In our daily life kids can be distracted in many ways, such as social media, having a guest at home, misbehaving with classmates, and so on. Teach them how to be focused in any circumstances to complete the assigned task, for example, complete homework in the presence of a best friend or don’t watch TV during exams, etc. Kids are naturally aggressive, training their minds how to act if someone misbehaves with them. When they show anger, distract and engage them in other kid’s activities like reading books, play video games, painting and sketching, and start conversations with them.
3- Communication Skills
Good communication skills make life easier and half of the problem can be resolved just with proper communication. Kids with good communication skills excel faster in their careers. Parents can improve kids communication skills by teaching them,
- How to behave with elder and younger
- How to greet someone or strangers
- Give respect to other’s feelings
- How to give opinion/feedback
- How to tackle rude behavior
This skill helps in all aspects of life. Strong communication skills can make a big difference in your child’s success throughout school and into adulthood.

Parents can inculcate this skill in their daily routine by making an action plan of their daily routine such as assigning time for TV, Games, Homework, etc. Train them to perform tasks on respective time in your absence too. Make it a habit to get up for school by her/himself. Better time management makes their life easier, and decreases stress, enhances productivity and efficiency.
5-Taking care of Health & Hygiene
Health is wealth. Whatever you intake affects your behavior. Kids love junk food; they don’t know which food is good for them. Parents should include a substantial amount of vegetables, fruits, and meats in their meals, and also instruct them to avoid junk food. Parents instruct them to wash hands before every meal, take bath regularly, brush teeth and nail cutting.
